Coke/Alumina Concrete Storage Tanks

Kitimat, British Columbia
overview

Project Overview

FWS was contracted to construct specialized concrete storage tanks designed for coke and alumina at a high-capacity industrial facility. The project focused on providing robust infrastructure to ensure efficient, safe, and reliable storage and handling of these critical materials throughout the storage and retrieval processes.

goals

Project Goals

  • Enhance storage and retrieval efficiency for fresh alumina and calcined coke.
  • Develop a highly durable and reliable storage system.
  • Minimize contamination risks and optimize material flow.

    Tools

    Technologies and Innovations

Key technologies and features integrated into the project include:

    • Slipform Concrete Silos: Two large slipform concrete silos, one for storing 20,000 tonnes of fresh alumina and another for 10,000 tonnes of calcined coke, were constructed. These silos provide a strong, secure, and durable environment for storing materials.
    • Concrete Reclaim Tunnels: These tunnels were designed to streamline the material retrieval process, allowing for efficient and controlled access to stored materials.
    • Sloped Bin Bottoms: The silos feature sloped bottoms to ensure smooth material flow towards the reclaim tunnels, minimizing clumping and ensuring efficient discharge of both alumina and coke.
